Joe Biden likes to think of himself as an average Joe, but he is, like, the President. So he’s not average, and neither is SPIN farmer Mary Ackley.
If you watched our 2016 Member Meetup, you met Mary when she was a year into starting up Little Wild Things City Farm. She had always dreamed of becoming a farmer, and in 2015, after being rejected for an apprenticeship at Joel Salatin’s Polyface Farm, she found her way to SPIN.
Following it’s multi-locational model, she used a churchyard garden and a restaurant’ basement as her growing spaces, and her condo as home base, while still holding down her government job.
DC, as we all know, is the red tape capital of the country, and regulatory agencies there were so clueless about urban farming that she had to ignore some rules and make up others, Meanwhile, the market for her crops exploded. Microgreens quickly became her signature crop, and she shared her $138k expansion plan to build an indoor operation plan in our meetup.
We don’t know what the rules are for urban farming in DC now, but POTUS obviously liked what he saw on his 30 minute tour of Little Wild Things City Farm, so Mary must be doing something right. Keep it up Mary! You’re doing all SPIN farmers proud, and showing just how big an economic impact small farmers can have.
