What Happened to Local Food?

In the mid-2000’s, a Canadian couple captured widespread attention with their 100 mile diet, and inspired others to follow them down the road to local food. In 2007 “locavore” was chosen word of the year by Oxford University Press. People started lugging around CSA boxes, and farm-to-table restaurants transformed fresh and local into high-end cuisine.

Fast forward to 2021. Local foods has evolved from a movement into a market.  The size of the local foods market is now a multi-billion dollar industry. Last year empty grocery store shelves forced everyone to wonder where their food was going to come from. Suddenly, they discovered the true value of having local farmers to produce it. Any elitist image local foods had finally bit the dust. Now, no matter where anyone falls on the ideological or political spectrums, there ‘s a reason to want local food

That’s good news for both new and seasoned SPIN farmers because an expanding markets and ever-new ways to reach them make it easier to start and build viable businesses. The more farmers who can bring in significant cash, the more who will be able to stay in business, and the bigger and stronger our segment of the farming industry will become.

Right now it’s all good.
